Advising

Academic Advising

Seawolf Scholars provides advising that recognizes students as whole people, not just their academic records. Through the Seawolf Scholars Program, students receive individualized support from the Seawolf Scholars Advisor, who helps them navigate college requirements, connect with campus resources, and build a support system at SSU.

The Seawolf Scholars Advisor takes a holistic advising approach, which means conversations may include academics, housing, financial aid, scholarships and grants, campus involvement, balancing college with personal responsibilities, and identifying services that may support a student’s overall well-being.

Students are expected to meet with the Seawolf Scholars Advisor twice each semester to stay connected to program support and remain on track for priority registration. These meetings are an opportunity to review academic progress, prepare for registration, ask questions, and learn more about available services.

Seawolf Scholars students can meet with the Seawolf Scholars Advisor for support with:

  • Academic planning and course selection
  • Reviewing the Academic Requirements Report (ARR)
  • Understanding General Education and university requirements
  • Preparing for registration and priority registration
  • Exploring or changing majors and minors
  • Reviewing transfer credits
  • Navigating housing, financial aid, and basic needs questions
  • Balancing college, work, personal responsibilities, and campus life
  • Connecting with scholarships, grants, campus resources, and student support services
  • Referrals to campus partners when additional support is needed

General Advising Questions

What does Priority Registration mean?

Priority registration ensures that a student who is in the Seawolf Scholars program will have an early registration time and allows the student to get the courses that they need to complete their degree in a timely manner.

How do I prepare for Priority Registration?

To prepare for your priority registration time, it is recommended that students have an advising meeting with BOTH their faculty advisor and Seawolf Scholars Advisor.  Their faculty advisor will support students with specific degree requirements each semester.

Look at your ARR and see what areas you need to complete and search for courses in the Seawolf Scheduler.  For more information, please visit the Advising Central website for how-to guides on viewing your ARR.

You may find your assigned academic advisor(s) a few different ways:

Once you have been accepted into the Seawolf Scholars program, you are eligible to schedule a one-on-one appointment with the Seawolf Scholars Academic Advisor.  You must log in to your MYSSU account and follow the directions given on the Advising Central page by clicking the following link: LoboConnect.

If you have been placed on Financial Aid Disqualification, please meet with your Seawolf Scholars Advisor as soon as possible. They will help you navigate the Satisfactory Academic Progress appeal process or other available options.

  • You can find the Satisfactory Appeal Progress appeal form in your MyFA Forms in your MySSU portal.
  •  An SAP appeal can be made if the student has extenuating circumstances that seriously affect their academic performance.
  • A SAP appeal includes:
    • A personal statement that includes the extenuating circumstances for all semesters in which a 2.0 was not met
    • What has changed to ensure the student will meet SAP standards
    • An academic plan that the student will follow to maintain a 2.0 in the future.

If you have been placed on academic probation, please set up an advising meeting with your Seawolf Scholars Advisor to support you in creating an academic plan to get off Academic Probation.

How does our Seawolf Scholars program support our students on Academic Probation?

Our Seawolf Scholars Program has developed an Academic Probation Plan to help our students build academic skills in studying, note-taking, and organization that strengthen their academic endurance. Students should schedule an advising appointment as soon as possible to begin bi-weekly check-ins to build a personalized plan.

How do you know if you are on academic probation?

  • You are placed on academic probation when your cumulative OR SSU GPA falls below a 2.0.
  • You can be removed from academic probation after you have a cumulative GPA and your SSU GPA has been raised to 2.0 or better.

For more information on academic probation,  please visit the Regulations and Policies Page.

When a student receives a financial aid warning, it means that they have not met their SAP requirements.

What is SAP?

SAP is a student's Satisfactory Academic Progress. A student receiving financial aid must meet the following requirements to receive their aid package.

For a student to receive their aid package, they must meet each of the major components:

  2. Graduate students need to complete 70% of the cumulative units attempted.
  3. Maximum Time Frame Standard: Complete a degree program within 150% of the units of the degree.
  4. GPA standard: meet the minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for undergraduate students 3.0 or above for graduate students
